How to Participate & Rules

The process is simple and designed to ensure a fair and fun creative day for everyone:

  1. Register for Free: Secure your spot by registering online! (See form at the bottom of the page)Participation is free . The registration deadline is 20th of February.
  2. Collect Your Materials: Please arrive at the Vessel Gallery between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM to collect your Welcome Pack and pre-stamped canvas or watercolor paper. You must use this provided material for your competition entry.
  3. Paint Outdoors: Work must be created entirely outdoors (en plein air), on location within the map boundaries provided. All 2D mediums are welcome!
  4. Submission for Prizes: Return your wet or dry finished piece to the Grahamstown Hall between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Please provide the event organizers with your reserve price and title. This is the minimum price your piece can sell for in the silent auction.
  5. Enjoy the Show, nibbles, drinks and prize giving!


Awards, Exhibition & Silent Auction

The “Wet Wall” Exhibition

All submitted artwork will be immediately placed on table easels for the public viewing, starting at 5 PM at the Grahamstown Hall. This is a rare chance for patrons to see art fresh off the easel!

Awards Ceremony & Silent Auction

The excitement starts at 5:00 PM with the Awards Ceremony, immediately followed by the Live Art Auction.

  • Prizes will be awarded for Best in Show, Runner-Up, Under 18, Under 12 and People’s Choice, sponsored by our generous local Thames businesses.
  • Sale Commission: We retain a 20% commission on all artwork sold through the auction to fund future Paint Out events. The remainder goes directly to the artist.


What to Bring & Safety

We encourage all artists to be prepared for painting outdoors! Please bring hats, sunscreen, insect repellent, water, snacks, and any necessary weather protection (e.g., windbreakers or a portable umbrella). Please be mindful of private property, public paths, and your personal safety while setting up your easel


Buyer Payment and Artwork Collection

All auction winners and buyers will need to make payment in full at the Grahamstown Hall immediately following the auction. Payment methods accepted will include Cash, Eftpos, and Credit Card.

Collection Options:

  1. Immediate Collection: If the artwork is dry (e.g., watercolour, acrylic, pastel), buyers are welcome to take their purchases home directly after payment at the Grahamstown Hall.
  2. Next-Day Pickup: For paintings that are still wet (e.g., fresh oil paintings) or for buyers who prefer not to transport them immediately, you may collect your purchased artwork from The Creativity Room on Sunday, November 30th during business hours.


Image & Copyright Agreement

By registering for and participating in the Thames Paint Out, you agree to the following terms regarding the use of your artwork:

Promotional Use (Event & Area Marketing)

  • You grant The Creativity Room and its partners (including local businesses and area promoters) the right to use images and photographs of your submitted artwork for the sole purpose of promoting this event and the wider Thames area.
  • This includes use in event recaps, social media promotion, press releases, and marketing materials, across print and digital platforms.

Commercial Rights (Artist Retention)

  • Artists retain all commercial rights to their paintings. You are free to sell, reproduce, license, and profit from your original artwork after the event concludes.
  • The event’s promotional use does not grant any party the right to sell or reproduce your original physical painting outside of the official auction you are participating in.
